Brand Identity Design

A hypothetical branding project created for my Visual Design Principles class

Project Brief

The assignment was to develop a complete brand identity for Portal, a fictional teleportation device. This hypothetical technology needed a visual system that would balance innovation with approachability, making the revolutionary concept feel both exciting and trustworthy.

"At 42, we stand at the forefront of a transformative era, introducing the world to our visionary teleportation technology – the Portal. Our mission is nothing short of revolutionizing global travel by breaking barriers and connecting people in ways previously unimaginable. We thrive on innovation, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in teleportation. Safety is our paramount concern, and our patented technology ensures that entities maintain their unique attributes during teleportation, offering an unparalleled and reliable experience."

Brand Strategy

For this project, I developed a brand strategy that positions Portal as a transformative yet trustworthy technology. The concept needed to bridge science fiction and practical reality, making teleportation feel extraordinary but reliable.

My strategy focused on three key pillars:

  • Revolutionary Innovation: Highlighting the groundbreaking nature of the technology
  • Human-Centered Design: Emphasizing safety and accessibility
  • Global Connectivity: Showcasing how Portal connects people across geographical boundaries

Logo Design

The Portal logo embodies the essence of teleportation technology while maintaining a clean, recognizable form. The circular portal element with a human figure represents both the technological achievement and its human-centered purpose.

Brand Voice & Messaging

For Portal's communication strategy, I created a balance between technical innovation and human connection. The tone is confident yet approachable, using clear language to describe complex technology.

Key messaging from the CEO brief:

  • Revolutionary Yet Reliable: "Our patented technology ensures that entities maintain their unique attributes during teleportation."
  • Globally Connected: "Connecting people in ways previously unimaginable."
  • Democratizing Access: "Making teleportation accessible to all, irrespective of background or location."

Brand Applications

The Portal identity was applied across various touchpoints to ensure consistency while allowing for creative expression.

Design Process

My approach to this course project followed a comprehensive design process:

  1. Research & Inspiration: I studied retro-futuristic design aesthetics, science fiction visual language, and contemporary tech branding to inform my approach.
  2. Concept Development: Multiple directions were explored before settling on the final concept featuring the portal with human figure.
  3. Visual System Creation: Development of logo variations, color palette, typography, and supporting graphic elements.
  4. Application Design: Applied the brand system to various touchpoints including stationery, merchandise, and marketing materials.

Reflection & Learnings

This project taught me a lot about brand design for a hypothetical product. Here are my main takeaways:

Consistency Challenges

Maintaining visual consistency across different applications was harder than expected. The logo worked well at different sizes, but the starfield motif was difficult to adapt for smaller formats like business cards.

Typography Limitations

I spent too much time trying to find the "perfect" retro-futuristic font. In a real project, I would have sketched custom letterforms or modified existing typefaces to better match the concept instead of relying on off-the-shelf fonts.

Feedback From Class

My classmates pointed out that the color scheme reads more "mystical" than "technological." If I were to revise this, I'd experiment with a more tech-forward palette using cooler blues instead of purple, and maybe dial back the gold accents.

Overall, this exercise helped me understand how to create a cohesive identity system, even for something that doesn't exist. I'd like to explore more about how this brand would work in motion and interactive environments if I had more time.
